What Is an RF Combiner and How Does It Work?

An RF combiner takes two or more RF signals and produces a single output signal. Keenlion makes all RF combiners to spec for you, with very low signal loss thru the device (low insertion loss) and high signal rejection between ports (low port-to-port isolation). We supply RF combiners that operate consistently well over multiple frequency ranges (wideband).

Why you must have an RF Combiner in your system

Imagine you have many transmitters connected to just one antenna. If you don’t manage the signals carefully, they’ll start reflecting off everything around them and bumping into each other. The resulting signals will be distorted, which means your signal quality will go down. An RF combiner fixes this issue. It takes all the signals and puts them together at the same time into one signal per output. This allows different transmitters to use the same antenna and feeder, instead of having to use a separate antenna and feeder for each transmitter. The main benefits of this are fewer components, less transmission loss on the feeders, and less weight for mobile towers.

The Inner workings of an RF combiner

The internal structure of an RF combiner influences the way signals will be combined. The Wilkinson combiner uses quarter-wavelength transformer lines together with an isolation resistor in order to merge signals. At the same time, that isolation resistor keeps the other transmitters from seeing a mismatch problem because it traps any signal coming from the other transmitters. The other option is to use the resonant cavities. The cavity combiner combines signals utilizing special metal cavities which are designed to have very high Q value/ sharp cut-off frequencies. In both cases, the impedance of all the connected ports remains to 50Ω to ensure that there are no reflections of the reflected power back to the transmitter

Matching an RF Combiner to Your Application

The right RF combiner comes down to bandwidth, power level, and channel spacing. Broadband combining calls for a hybrid RF combiner. High-power cellular systems? Go with a cavity RF combiner and tight isolation. Before you specify, check insertion loss, isolation, VSWR, and continuous power rating — those four parameters decide whether your RF combiner performs the way you need.

At Keenlion, we don't hand you a catalog and wish you luck. We build RF combiners to order — custom frequency ranges, connector types, power ratings, and housings. Send us your specs and let's get yours built.

Si Chuan Keenlion Microwave a large selection in narrowband and broadband configurations, covering frequencies from 0.5 to 50 GHz. They are designed to handle from 10 to 30 watts input power in a 50-ohm transmission system. Microstrip or stripline designs are utilized, and optimized for best performance.
